The Magellan: The Future is Here
This project was created to be a theme park,
based on the Magellan interstellar space craft that was invented in 2091. This
was a tedious process for me, as I had issues figuring out exactly how to design such a
ship that was them park friendly. The goal was to create it with similar
attributes to that of the Harry Potter theme park, which has multiple places to
visit, plenty of fun things to do, and also the Evermore theme park, which is
extreme LARPing. I took inspiration from the Mass Effect games, in which they
have a huge ship called the Citadel, which is like a much bigger version of the
Magellan. This inspired me for what rooms I created and for some of the
characters I created. The entire idea I went for was to incorporate both of
those theme parks into one park. Have actors that give you quests, while still
having an interactive world. I tried my best to make a quest that I would
consider interesting and entertaining. The main engine needs to be fixed and you
have to collect 4 items that will actually fix the engine. It’s not so easy
getting these items, as people will require you to get items for them in order for
you to get the items you need. This involves going to multiple rooms, multiple
times, which was also not an easy thing to accomplish. Yes, I was able to
duplicate the rooms, but having to redesign each room so that they looked
similar to what they were originally, but with slight differences wasn’t easy.
I had to go back to each individual room and memorize all of the character and
object placements in order to make the same or a similar room to the one
previously. The character designs were interesting, but not difficult. The main
characters throughout this quest all look different, and each of them have different
dialogue, which was fun to write, because it let me explore ideas to make the
rooms more interesting and create characters with different backgrounds. In terms
of room colors, that was fun. I’ve always enjoyed making the different rooms
and have them stand out. I only used the same color pallet for the rooms in
which they were originally designed for. So, each room is its own color design.
I tried to incorporate characters that didn’t mean much to the story but had a
purpose to the actual theme park itself. I created vendors, robots that give
you information, and allowed you to use a “Codex” which is simply your phone
with a specific app you download to access the Magellan even further. A lot of
the park itself was created with giving information to the guests. If they wanted
more background on the ship, this codex gives them that. It even gives
backgrounds on the rooms you visit, which made the actual experience more real
when you understand where you are and what’s actually going on within the park
itself.
